Frequently Asked Questions
The General and it’s Kohler engine will last for many years, and thousands of machine hours, if maintained properly. Maintenance is suggested every 100 machine hours and includes the following: Oil Filter, Air Filter, and Engine Oil. Every 200 hours, it is suggested to change or re-gap spark plugs to .030″, and replace the fuel filter. Also, with any air cooled engine, keeping dirt and debris buildup on the engine block surface to a minimum will help the engine to run cooler and maximize the life of internal motion components.
A one-man crew can clean a residential air duct cleaning system fairly easily. A one-man crew can do 2 jobs per day, at a approximately $375 per job. At 10 jobs per week, the potential weekly gross earnings would be $3,750, and the potential yearly income would be $195,000. If you intend to work weekends, and large custom home jobs, this figure could easily be greater. (The amount charged for residential service will be dependent upon your location, certification, advertising, and licensing)
HEPA and Gas Portables are both great options to use on residential duct cleaning. However, when moving onto larger systems found in a light commercial application, the higher airflow from a Gas Portable will yield the same result with less effort and time on the job. Using a vacuum that creates higher airflow can often times mean that you’ll experience a significant savings in your labor cost.

Maintaining the less expensive first and second stage filters of the Electrak is the best way to keep filter cost down. Ignoring the maintenance of these filters will cause premature breakdown and require earlier replacement of the more expensive HEPA filter.
FTB003 – First Stage Filter: 2-3 Jobs (Residential/Light Commercial)
FTB020 – Second Stage Filter: Every 3-4 First Stage Filter Changes (6-12 Jobs)
FTH024 – HEPA Filter: Every 5-8 Second Stage Filter Changes
This filter replacement schedule will put your filter cost between $12-$16 per job.
Removing loosefill insulation is naturally a dusty task, and the fine dust particles can have a tendency to reduce the breath-ability of your insulation containment bag. Having an operator at the removal vacuum to monitor how full the bag is and the relative pressure, is always a good idea. An occassional light tap of the containment bag with a broom stick can help to release dust from the pores of the bag, allowing it to breathe better. Additionally, if you plan to move the bag after it has material in it, consider filling it atop a sturdy vinyl tarp. Rather than lifting the bag material to move it, lift on the tarp, so as to create a cradle for the heavy bag to be transported on.
our air compressor will last for many years and thousands of machine hours if maintained properly. Air compressors require regular air filter changes in both the engine, and the pump. Also, air compressors require regular oil changes in the engine, and the pump. Engine maintenance should follow a 100 hour schedule in which the air filter is changed, the oil is changed, and the oil filter (if applicable) is changed. Every 200 hours, the spark plugs should be changed or re-gapped to .040″, and the fuel filter should be changed (if applicable). Air compressor pumps use Non-Detergent 30 Weight oil. This means that the oil is free of additives and detergents that keep it from breaking down. Because non-detergent oil is used, pump oil should be changed every 90 days, regardless of use. Pump air filters can follow the 100 hour maintenance cycle.
Starting a service business requires more than just the best equipment. As a business owner, you will need to execute a successful advertising campaign. Many methods of advertising have been successful for duct cleaners including: door hangers, newspaper ads and coupons, coupon mailer programs, local home shows, word of mouth, and professional relationships. Try to find other service professionals in your local area that provide other services whose customers could mutually benefit by both His service and Yours.

– Calculate the volume of insulation to be removed. (Length x Width x Depth)
– Divide the Volume by the Capacity of Each Bag, 75 cu. ft. (Volume / 75)
– 70 ft long x 20 ft wide x 6″ (.5 ft) deep = 700 cubic ft – 700 cubic ft / 75 cubic ft per bag = 9.33 Bags for the Job
– Red InsulBag, GBD010, holds approximately 85 cubic feet, 12-Pack GBD011
– White Disposable Filter Bag, GBD002, holds 75 cubic feet, 12-Pack GBD003
